First-Day Classroom Introduction Games

For first-day introductions, use a classmate checklist when students can mingle, or paired choice sheets when you want them to stay seated. Demonstrate the procedure before handing out materials so students know how to begin a conversation.

Give mingling a simple rule

Find a Classmate has 20 checklist items. Students find classmates who fit the statements, with each person allowed to sign no more than two spaces. This rule encourages contact with more than one familiar friend.

Print one copy per student and provide pens or pencils. The fixed files come in US Letter and A4, with two pages in each size. Check the actual statements against your class before the event rather than assuming every student will be able to fill every box.

As a teacher adaptation, show how to introduce yourself and ask whether a statement fits. Let students leave a space blank. The activity can introduce classmates without becoming a race to finish a sheet.

Use paired choices when movement is awkward

School Would You Rather contains 12 choice pairs. Students circle one option in each row and compare answers with a classmate.

This gives seated partners something specific to discuss. The PDFs are non-editable, so inspect the prompts before printing. Do not plan to rewrite them within the supplied file.

Explain that different choices are expected. You can invite a few volunteers to share a comparison, but a whole-class explanation is a hosting choice rather than part of the stated print-and-circle procedure.

Choose a bundle for several welcome sessions

Classroom Icebreaker Games contains 25 activities across trivia, puzzles, prompts, picture rounds, word activities and group challenges. It includes a game-specific host guide and objective answer keys.

Use its menu to select activities after downloading. The description does not provide a complete named game list, so it does not establish that the standalone checklist or choice sheet above is included. Treat these as alternatives when deciding what to buy.

Prepare an introduction students can follow

  1. Decide whether students will move or remain with a partner.
  2. Read the selected prompts before the lesson.
  3. Print the matching paper size and a sample copy.
  4. Model one exchange without using a student's private information.
  5. Close the activity with a clear transition to the next task.

Keep a welcome activity separate from assessment. Its purpose here is to make an introduction easier, not to score how sociable a student is or how quickly they can collect names.

See the classroom planning guides for other room layouts and activity formats.
