Nurses Week on a Budget: One Game, No Extras
Your Nurses Week budget is basically paper, pens and goodwill. Pick one printable, count its paper and cutting before you buy anything, and spend the saved effort on a personal thank-you. Trivia needs no scissors, emoji needs a few, bingo needs the most.
Count the supplies before picking the prize
Start a short list: the printable purchase, paper, ink, pens, cutting time and any optional extras. An hour cutting tiny pieces is a real cost. Pick the activity that fits both the supply cupboard and your prep time.
Check current listing prices yourself. This guide compares the prep each game needs, which is where small budgets actually get squeezed.
If printing and a purchase aren't possible, try an original spoken prompt: “What's one small thing a teammate did this week that you appreciated?” Let people answer or pass. It's free and works on its own.
For the least cutting, start with trivia
Nurse Trivia has 20 multiple-choice questions over two player pages. Each A4 or US Letter PDF has four pages total: those question pages, a complete answer key and a host and print guide. You can distribute the question pages as printed, with no cut-apart calling set to prepare.
Print only the player pages for participants, keeping the answer key and guide with the organizer. If ten people are each receiving the full two-page question set, that's twenty player sheets before your host copy. Printing the entire four-page file ten times would double that paper for no useful reason.
The listing suggests ten to fifteen minutes for a timed round. If your team can't share that gap, offer an untimed version as your own hosting adaptation. Say when answers will be available, and don't make returning during a later break feel like falling behind.
Pairs are another suggested way to make the activity social and reduce the number of player sets you need. Ask before assuming everyone wants a partner. Some people will enjoy puzzling together; others want a quiet page and their own coffee.
For a smaller handout, test the emoji sheet
Nurse Emoji Game includes 20 clues, an answer key and a host guide. The A4 and US Letter single editions have three pages each. Bonus two-per-page editions provide cut-and-play half-sheets in both paper sizes.
That compact option gives you a smaller player handout, but it adds cutting and reduces picture and writing space. Test one sheet before choosing it for everyone. Full-page may be the better use of paper if the alternative leaves people struggling to see a clue.
The listing allows color or black-and-white printing and recommends 100% scale on matching paper. You can skip decorative backing sheets, individual envelopes and a color-coordinated pen purchase without changing what players do with the game.

For a standard timed round, the listing suggests five to eight minutes. An unscored, pauseable break-room version is your own house rule. Explain it at the start so nobody thinks they need to hurry through lunch to be eligible to finish.
Budget for bingo's pieces as well as its boards
Nurse Bingo includes 50 player boards with a center FREE space, 36 calling cards, a checklist, a host guide and printable token sheets. Its four PDFs supply the same boards in A4 and US Letter, full-page and two-per-page layouts.
This is the shared-round choice: someone calls illustrations, players mark matching pictures and the host checks a claimed winning pattern against the drawn cards. It avoids a question-and-answer quiz, but you do need the calling set ready and enough markers for players.
The listing says one 36-token sheet supplies one player. If you choose printable tokens, allow for those extra copies and the cutting. Ordinary white paper works for boards; cardstock is an optional way to make calling cards and tokens sturdier. Physical supplies don't arrive with the PDF.
| Your available preparation | Starting option | Count this before printing |
|---|---|---|
| No cutting session | Trivia | Two question pages per player set |
| Time to cut half-sheets | Emoji | Player copies plus a separate host key |
| Caller and cutting time | Bingo | Boards, complete calling set and markers |
If you already have enough suitable removable markers, you can plan around those rather than cutting a fresh token supply. Check that they sit comfortably inside the squares. Make the win pattern clear before calling and keep drawn cards for checking winners.
Print one small batch, not every edition
Print a test using the file that matches your paper. For trivia and emoji, follow the 100% instructions. For bingo, use Actual Size or 100%, single-sided, with portrait for full-page or landscape for the supplied two-per-page edition. Leave pages per sheet at one for bingo's already paired layout.
Once the sample works, count complete player sets and print the number you expect to use, with a plan for refilling. Don't print every page of every edition “just in case.” A labelled spare-copy envelope is easier to manage than a mixed pile of keys and player sheets.
Bingo's complete full-page files have 58 pages each and its compact files 29. Those totals include support material. Select the needed boards and print the host support once, adding enough marker copies if you're using the printable tokens.
Let the appreciation carry the ending
You can finish with a warm thank-you and an answer reveal. A prize is optional; it doesn't have to be the thing that makes participation worthwhile. Keep a repeat opportunity for people who were busy during the first invitation.
For staggered breaks, follow the night-shift huddle plan. For a table that stays available, try the break-room station setup. Spend your effort on making the invitation clear and the activity complete. People should be able to join without finding you, borrowing missing pieces or wondering whether they've arrived too late.
Questions and answers
Which option needs the least cutting?
Trivia question pages can be handed out as printed. Emoji half-sheets need cutting, and bingo needs a prepared calling set plus markers.
Do we need prizes?
Skip them. Compare answers or cheer a bingo win together. Just tell people what to expect before you start so nobody feels cheated.
Are the four bingo PDFs different sets?
All four editions contain the same 50 boards. Pick A4 or US Letter and full-page or two-per-page for your event.
Can we run an activity without buying anything?
Yes. Ask "What's one small thing a teammate did this week that you appreciated?" and let people answer or pass. The printable games are separate purchases.
